PlasmaCar Review- Don’t forget to enter the Giveaway

Yea!! We finally got our PlasmaCar!! I have to say, this is a fun toy for any age. I rode it for a while around the block and probably enjoyed it more than Ella. Be sure to read all of the specs on the PlasmaCar on my Giveaway post.

Let me first say, don’t let someone put it together who can’t read instructions. I was happily putting together my PlasmaCar when my mom’s friend walked by and asked if he could help. I thought, hey- a guy can get this done much quicker than me… wrong. It was very nice of him to help, but you must follow all directions in order for the PlasmaCar to work properly. The back wheels need to go in at a 45 degree angle. They have a slit which should fit into the wheel notch. If it doesn’t fit, you have the wrong wheel on. Also, don’t tighten the bolt to the steering wheel until you have aligned the front wheels. It doesn’t work well when not aligned!

OK, totally didn’t mean to pick on him, but these tips will come in handy if you are the lucky winner of the PlasmaCar.

I was proud that Ella was able to figure out how to ride the PlasmaCar in 5 minutes. Now, she did not master riding the PlasmaCar, but she is only 2.8 yrs old and I had to quickly get this on tape before the giveaway ended.

When Ella was on even ground she was able to move the PlasmaCar very well- when using both hands. I think next year this will be her favorite outside toy. We just need to find a great place to go riding so she can really feel the speed.

Another tip, if your child is 38 pounds, the PlasmaCar can tip over if on uneven ground. So make sure you stay next to your child at all times in case this happens. A helmet might come in handy too, but I forgot ours when we ventured out.

My thoughts- I think this is a great design and the best outside riding toy I’ve seen. It is built to last, you don’t have to use batteries, it’s light weight so it can fit into your car, and anyone can use it. I’d love to have one more so we can have PlasmaCar races.

You can still win a PlasmaCar on Mkokopelli until September 15, 2009.

Time to Talk About Sex and a Giveaway

This Giveaway has ended. Thanks to all that entered!
We went to the zoo on Saturday and happened to catch the turtles above in action. A 10 year old girl asked her father what was wrong with them and he replied nothing. Then she asked what they were doing. As a bystander I felt really bad for the dad who was about to have to answer a lot of questions then or on the way home. But is this how you want to first talk about sex with your child?

This was my 4th visit to the Columbia zoo in the past 2 years and every time we’ve been there I’ve seen some animals in action. One baboon was actually pleasuring himself our last visit. I luckily have a 2 year old who I don’t have to explain these things to, yet. But, when she starts to get more curious I want to be prepared to answer questions and hopefully before we are in a public situation where it could be more awkward.

I was sent, “101 Questions Kids Really Ask… And the Answers They Need to Know,” and “A Time to Talk” DVD from HEALTHY Edudynamics. I was hesitant at first to reply about doing the review, but thought it couldn’t hurt to go ahead and have ideas for what is to come. I am so glad I did!

The book is made to help parents prepare for questions their children might ask and to give them a better understanding on how to approach the adolescence talk. Your child can read the book as well and there are awesome pictures in each chapter. The book is basically real kids asking Mary Halter, a puberty educator, questions about puberty and her answering them in the most professional and informed way possible. Even though I knew the answers to the questions, I didn’t know how to fully explain them to a child who is clueless. If your child came up to you and asked what is inside the testicles, could you give them a complete and thorough answer?

At the end of the book Mary helps parents with the why’s, when and where you should discuss these things with your children. There are also “Time Out” sections in the book with stories from real parents and most of the stories are about younger children. I think a parent of any aged child would truly benefit from this book. It is geared for children in grades 4-6, but better it’s to be prepared than not!

One of my favorite things about this book is that it has a chapter on sexual assault and sexual harassment. I won’t get into my personal experiences, but lets just say I went through it at a very early age. This is a topic I will discuss with my child at very long lengths. More parents need to know ways to discuss this with their children so they don’t feel like they are doing something wrong if it does happen. Here is a scary fact for you: 1 in 4 girls are sexually abused before the age of 18. 1 in 6 boys are sexually abused before the age of 18. It is never too early to discuss sexual abuse!

Another chapter in the book which is great is the “Age Group Commonalities as Children Grow Physically, Socially and Sexually.” The chapter starts from birth and goes up to 6th grade. Being a mom of a toddler, this was really informative! I did learn to not use made-up names for anatomical parts. I always called a vagina a Ya-ya.. don’t ask why.. but Mary said, “The longer they continue to use inaccurate labels for these parts, the more confusing and difficult it is to correct their language.” This is something I didn’t even think about, but am glad I learned.

As I was reviewing the DVD, “A Time to Talk,” I grew rather bored and thought a child might lose interest as well. But, after thinking about the video in a different perspective I realized this was stuff that I knew… but a child viewing the video doesn’t know this information and it is a very curious subject for them. The DVD explains everything a child should know about puberty, sex, and childbirth. Mary suggested if your child gets bored while watching the video, it is a good stopping point to talk about questions they might have and discuss what they have watched. This is a review from a parent who actually viewed the video with her child,

“I really didn’t want to do this. I can’t tell you how nervous I was. My husband and I had previewed the video and made 3 pages of notes. We sat down with the boys and told them that I had participated in a group and received a DVD that would help us talk to them about growing up. I followed the instructions in the Parent Guide and told them that this was accurate information that we felt they needed to know. We also explained that throughout the DVD there would be an opportunity to ask questions. Both my husband and I were totally surprised how attentive they were (I’m sure nervous as well) but they said they weren’t. At the first pause slide we asked if they had questions and the both said “no”. Again, following the Guide, my husband said, many boys your age wonder….and that opened the door. By the time we got to the information about babies, we could not shut them up. They both wanted to know all kinds of details about when I was pregnant and especially the day they were born. I am so grateful I had the opportunity to do this. I will truthfully say now, Mary, I am a believer! I never thought my boys had any questions and they probably would never have thought it was OK to have those questions if we hadn’t had your DVD. Thank you!”

Mary has been doing puberty education for 19 years. In those years, she has personally seen over 81,000 4th-6th graders. She also works with parents, teachers and youth serving agency staff to teach them how to discuss these sensitive issues with children.

Green tip: Unplug it. Unplug appliances, such as a toaster or radio, when you’re not using them. They use power even when they’re not running.

New Wave Enviro Review

There are always a hundred things to go do around Charlotte in the Fall. Especially outside adventures, fairs, festivals, and produce pickings. Not to mention great weather for picnics. To save money, we always pack a lunch to take with us. Ella is at the “do it myself” stage and wants to carry her own bag. Our lunch cooler is way too big for her to carry. At the perfect time- I was sent the Lunchopolis made by New Wave Enviro- from Atlantis Natural to review.
It is the perfect size for Ella to carry her own lunch. And of course it is pink which she loves. They also have a blue and brown bag. The 15 oz. water bottle is great for an outdoor day outing. We took it to the zoo with us over the weekend and her drink lasted the whole trip. We had blueberries in a small container and the juice didn’t leak out at all!

I learned that 3.5 billion pounds of garbage is generated each year from juice boxes, water bottles, aluminum foil and plastic bags. That’s a lot of trash! A Eco-friendly alternative is to carry reusable container lunch sets that are safe for you and the environment. The Lunchopolis comes with a 15 oz. water bottle, large sandwich container, a medium size container and 2 smaller containers, which are all recyclable. The lunch bag is insulated with cotton and has a mesh bag to store a ice pack. The bag, containers and bottle are all dishwasher safe.

I have read some reviews about the Lunchopolis claiming they are not BPA free. The sources claim the containers are made with polycarbonates which can leak BPA. This is from the Lunchopolis website:

  1. The containers are made from polypropylene and the lids are made from Polyethylene. The bottle is made from Polypropylene and the cap is made from Polyethylene. The air bladder is made from silicone. Polypropylene is a recycling code # 5. These plastics are BPA free.
  2. The lunch box was tested under CPSIA rules( and found safe with no lead or phthalate’s in the product). The bag bottles and containers were tested by SGS. SGS, headquartered in Switzerland is the world’s leading Inspection, Verification, Testing and Certification company.

So there you have it! No bad stuff in this product. If you want to get technical, polyethylene isn’t biodegradable and would take several centuries to degrade. But, as long as you recycle the products after you are done with them, that won’t matter. Always remember to check the recycle code on the bottom of plastics. If it says 3 or 7 it may contain BPA.

I also got to try a New Wave Enviro 12 oz. Stainless Kids Lunchbox Bottle and highly recommend getting one! I love how cold it keeps beverages, even when outside in the heat. It is just the right size for little hands and I like the sports cap. I had a problem with it leaking at the beginning until I realized there was clear piece you could push to control the flow. If the clear piece is poked down, it flows more readily. After I figured that out, I haven’t had any issues. The interesting thing about stainless steel is that the interior needs no coating unlike aluminum.Another cool thing I learned about the Stainless Steel Bottles is that they are virtually indestructible. Here is a picture of one after it was run over by a car:
Atlantis Natural also carries a variety of New Wave Enviro products including: the Bamboo Lunch Bag, Bathtub filter, larger Stainless Steel bottles and more.

Preschool Envy

So every single one of Ella’s friends is in preschool this year. I get to hear about everyone’s first day and all of the parents gloating about getting some free time. Today, thanks to a great friend, I got a taste of what it would be like if I had 3 hours to myself… OMG!! I so wish I had the money to send Ella to school!! In those 3 hours I was able to catch up on some emails, vacuum the whole house and clean my living room- and I mean CLEAN! I got stains off of the carpet, vacuumed twice, wiped off every surface, organized my scrap table all while listening to my music on full blast!! I so envy all of the mom’s who get 3 hours to themselves twice a week. Maybe next year…

Well, since all of Ella’s friends are in school I’ve decided to homeschool her for the next year. Coming up in October I will be sharing lots of educational toys, games, art projects and other preschool activities you can do at home with your child. So stay tuned to see how it turns out!

Palma Collection Necklace Giveaway

This contest has ended. Thanks to all that entered!
Can you believe Fall will be here in 2 weeks? It is about time to start digging out Fall clothes and decor or if you’re like me- it’s time to go shopping. I love what each season brings, but I especially love Fall. There is just something about the colors and scents. So in honor of Fall fashion, I want to introduce you to a jewelry line called Palma Collection.

Palma Collection is a Eco-friendly company who handcrafts fabulous jewelry made from tagua nuts. Tagua nuts are from the Phytelephas tree, which are also known as ivory palms. Tagua nuts have a similar cellular structure to animal ivory and can be easily carved- with no elephants harmed! The tagua nuts are only found along the South American Coast which makes them a rarity! Check out the video below on how the nuts are turned into exquisite jewelry!

What drew me to Palma Collection, besides being Eco-friendly, were the exotic colors of their jewelry. Each Palma Collection piece blew me away with their stunning vividness and unique designs. All of the dyes used in making Palma Collection jewelry are non-toxic. This is especially important if you have an infant who might end up putting the dyed tagua nut pieces in their mouth. I really had a hard time choosing which color I wanted to review since they all were so beautiful.

Palma Collection sent me a Hosono Necklace in Lime Green to review and I’m seriously in love! The strap looks and feels like it is suede, but it is cotton. So there are absolutely no animals harmed for the sake of Palma Collection fashion. The Hosono has several tagua nut slivers that dangle at different lengths and you can adjust the strap. The circle can be worn as a choker or lower like in the picture above. I wore it to a Fall festival today and was asked several times which vendor I bought it from. The tagua nut slices are soft and almost silky, kind of like a oyster shell. It is very light weight and I forgot I was even wearing it. I hate when I wear a longer necklace and I feel it pulling all of the time. The Hosono Necklace comes in 6 radiant colors, though no necklace will be exactly identical. Palma Collection has a huge variety of necklaces, bracelets and earrings, so be sure to see them all!

Since I’ve had 2 amazing weeks of Eco-friendly kid stuff, I want to share the Eco-love with all of you mommies!

The Discount: You can get 10% off any order by entering MKOKO at the checkout until September 30, 2009. Have fun shopping!
