Breastfeeding Booby Traps

In honor of World Breastfeeding Week, Aug. 1-7, I wanted to share a article I wrote for FG in late April:

April 26, 2011, I had the chance to listen to Earth Mama’s owner Melinda Olson, Mothering founder and author Peggy O’Mara, Bettina Forbes from Best for Babies Foundation, and Shari Crisco from My Baby Experts talk about breastfeeding on Ustream. You can catch the episode rerun here. Recently, Earth Mama’s breastfeeding photo’s were deleted by Facebook employees. You can see the pictures on Earth Mama’s blog. If you are a regular on Facebook, you know this isn’t the first time breastfeeding and even pregnancy pictures have been taken down due to being “obscene.” Ironically enough, as we were chatting that night, we couldn’t type the word boob because it was “inappropriate!”

I recently read an article from CBS Business Network saying that women who breastfeed could hurt their careers according to a recent study published by the University of Montana. CBS implies the consequences of breastfeeding at work may be jeopardizing your career due to the ill conception some people have of breastfeeding. The article states, “A new study found that women who were breastfeeding were described by others as less competent, less capable in math and less likely to be hired.” Even though it sounds like both authors are advocating formula, they actually go on to say that new mothers should breastfeed and insist on the right to do it in the workplace so it becomes “normalized.”

So basically both authors are saying that it’s not normal to breastfeed. ???? No wonder so many women are scared or don’t want to breastfeed!  It’s scary to me that it is now considered normal to give your infant synthetic milk instead of the breast.

As a mom who was previously embarrassed to breastfeed in public, there is something majorly wrong with this situation in America. Women shouldn’t feel any embarrassment (or receive ridicule) to feed their hungry child openly.  I can’t recall anyone in my family breastfeeding in public.  I never saw my friends breastfeed either. So when it came my time, it was something I felt was very private. Now looking back, I find it incredibly ridiculous. But I didn’t have the support, I didn’t have the knowledge, and breastfeeding just wasn’t an open thing. So many other women face this issue daily. They are looked down upon for something that is pure and what our bodies were built to do.

By labeling breastfeeding pictures as “obscene,” it’s no wonder breastfeeding is not more accepted in our society. Bettina Forbes from Best for Babes calls this “cultural booby traps.” On their website, they list numerous “booby traps” that prevents mothers from successfully breastfeeding. There are a ton of moms who get past the “booby traps” and successfully breastfeed. Then there are moms (like myself) who didn’t continue and now feel incredibly guilty. Yes, 4 years later and I still beat myself up for it.
In my situation, my daughter lost weight at the hospital and I was told I HAD to supplement by all of the nurses and her Dr. This is called being “institutional booby trapped.” I listened to what they said, because at the time, I knew no different. My daughter latched on immediately after she was born, but after supplementation, she had issues. I then met with a lactation consultant and she told me to keep supplementing. After 3 1/2 months of doing both, my milk pretty much dried up and I gave up. Everyone told me it was ok to give up, that I tried my best, and formula is healthy. Which I learned this is considered to be a cultural booby trap as well!

Every new mom deserves a strong support system, especially when it comes to breastfeeding. Today, there are so many resources available and so many wonderful moms who are willing to help. Not to mention wonderful products available to help with discomfort, milk production, nipple cracks, and more! Things I wasn’t aware of when my daughter was born. There are numerous ways to help defeat the booby traps and be successful at breastfeeding.

Did you run into any booby traps? How did you overcome them?

Summer Crafting… Thank you Pinterest

So it’s the “dog days” of summer, and if your weather is anything like it is here- it’s HOT!! To keep us busy during the day, we’ve been crafting thanks to Pinterest!! If you haven’t joined Pinterest, then you need to right away! (Message me with your email address if you want a invite) They have thousands of pictures with links to blogs and websites with fabulous ideas. Whether it’s crafts, DIY projects, fashion, photography, recipes, educational ideas, products, sayings, you name it- they’ve got a picture with a link.

Here are some of our latest projects:
Quote Painting

This was one of my favorite projects. I wanted something inspirational to hang above my desk and thought this was the perfect craft for the both of us. So I took some of my old scrapbook sticker letters I had left over and wrote my quote.  I put them on the canvas and made sure they were secure. I then let E use Clementine paint to cover the letters. I then let the painting semi-dry and pulled off the letters. The regular sticker letters worked much better than the cardboard letters. I had to go back over those with white paint since the color paint seeped into the crevices.

Rain Food Color Painting

This project needed to come with a warning- SERIOUSLY MESSY! I had some old food coloring that I knew I’d never use, so I thought this project would be great. The kiddo dropped random colors on  heavy card stock paper that is used for scrapbooking. Regular paper will not work. The instructions I read said only to get it wet for a couple of seconds in the rain. The blogger had let the paper sit outside for 30 seconds and said that was too long. So I thought I’d stick my hand out the door and let a few drops get on the paper. DUMB move. My white house was splatter painted with neon food coloring. Not to mention my arm, E’s face, our clothes, and the floor. Thank goodness it was hardwood and not carpet!
If you do this project (the painting looks really cool!) get an umbrella, go all the way outside, lay the painting down and move a foot away from it while still under the umbrella, let rain hit for 5 seconds, then pick up.

Bag Of Fun
This is great for the disorganized mom (me) who has a ton of brilliant ideas but forgets to do them. I used a PlanToys cotton bag one of E’s toys came in. I used fabric markers to let E decorate. I then cut up pieces of E’s old art into rectangles. I wrote 20 ideas for us to do, and every week day, we pick one for us to do. Here is our 20 for the month:
  1. Make something out of a box (I really want to make a sailboat out of a milk carton)
  2. Make sock puppets and put on a show
  3. Go on a nature hunt (write 20 things to find outside and see who can find them first)
  4. Make chalk pictures (draw a balloon and have your child lay next to it so it looks like they are floating)
  5. Read a book under a tree or under the stars
  6. Make giant homemade bubbles (use a long cotton string tied to a stick as a wand)
  7. Have a party! (guests are optional)
  8. Make a hand painting (I was thinking a sunflower hand)
  9. Visit a local farm or farmers market
  10. Bake something for your neighbor
  11. Visit the park and find 5 things green. Take pictures
  12. Build a fort
  13. Explore our city
  14. Make a pet rock
  15. Throw a toy swap party
  16. Melt and make new crayons
  17. Catch fireflies
  18. Go on an alphabet scavenger hunt (find something that begins with each letter)
  19. Go play in a fountain or spray ground
  20. Learn about a new animals. You must see it in person
 Blow Art
This was supposed to be a cherry tree, but it looks more like coral or something. 🙂 You put a dab of paint at the end of a canvas. Then use a straw to blow the paint into “stems” and “branches.” After it has dried, use balls of tissue paper and glue them to the piece. This is a super fun project and looks really neat! We will have to try for the cherry tree again another day.

This has to be one of my favorite DVD’s Yo Gabba Gabba has released! E loves music and performing, so this kept her attention for all 4 episodes. The second she saw that the episode Band was on, she had to find her guitar so she could join in.

Differences is one of my all time favorite episodes. Maybe it’s because Leslie Hall is in the episode. She is one of the most unique, wonderful individuals I’ve ever met! The episode points out all of the differences we have and how it is a good thing we aren’t alike. I love the song, “Don’t Say Mean Things” and “All My Friends are Different.” Here is a clip:

Be sure to grab Yo Gabba Gabba: Music Makes Me Move! August 9 at a DVD retailer near you!

*Thanks to Nickelodeon and Paramount Home Entertainment for sending me a review copy of the movie. These are my thoughts and opinions.

Skin Free GIVEAWAY

This giveaway has ended. Thanks to all that entered. Congrats to Linda Kish for winning!

The Summer months always bring on a bad case of eczema for me and the kiddo. My Dr. tried to give me some harsh chemical lotion for the rash or told me to deal with it and I chose the latter. That was until last year when I tried Skin Free. You might remember my blog post here.

Skin Free/ Blue Ridge Gypsy began in 2000 when Julie Hilton moved to Blue Ridge, VA. Julie worked in a pharmacy setting and was constantly asked about difficult skin problems. She realized the void in the market and began Skin Free.

Skin Free just came out with some new products and I’m so happy that I got to try them! I was sent their new: Antibacterial Foaming Soap, Chemical Free Sunscreen, Natural Deodorant Stick, and this isn’t new- but the awesome Whipped Tamanu Body Butter.

I have been in search of a great natural deodorant. Lots of big named brands use harmful chemicals like aluminum chlorate, parabens, propylene glycol, triclosan, and aluminum.  Natural Cosmetics has a great list of all of the bad chemicals plus why they are harmful if you want to read more.  Lots of companies greenwash deodorants and it’s really hard to find a true all natural that really works. I’ve tried several that I love, but they stop working in a couple of hours or they leave a greasy stain on my clothes. I tried the Skin Free Deodorant and I was so happy 8 hours later when it was still working! It is formulated with niaouli essential oil and baking soda to inhibit the growth of bacteria which causes odors. It doesn’t stain clothing and leaves your armpits feeling smooth. I really like the extra protection when putting on after a shower. The oils prevent razor burn.

I also love the Antibacterial Foaming Soap!  The naiouli essential oils are a natural antibacterial, so no nasty triclosan is needed. I love the soap pump that dispenses the foam soap. It’s so much easier for a kiddo to use and wash off. Skin Free has several scents like original, lavender, peppermint, grapefruit geranium, sweet orange, mandarin vanilla, and lemon verbena. I love the smell of the original naiouli essential oils.

We were sent the Chemical Free All Natural SPF 30 Sunscreen, but I forgot to tell Julie that E and I are allergic to zinc oxide. So Skin Free made us a new kind using only titanium dioxide. That is how awesome this company is!! I gave my friend the Natural Sunscreen with zinc for review and she gives it 2 thumbs up. She still got a nice tan, without a burn during the past couple of weeks that she has used it. Her babies also used it and did not get a burn or rash. The Skin Free sunscreen is made with several sun resistant essential oils, a cream base, zinc oxide, and titanium dioxide. There are no parabens, oxybenzone, benzophenone, PABA, octyl salicylate, homosalate, vitamin A, fragrance, octinoxate, benzyl alcohol, retinyl palmitate, propylene glycol, PEGs, phthalates, or phenoxyethanol. There are other dangerous chemicals in sunscreens, but these are to name a few.

My favorite Skin Free product is the Whipped Tamanu Butter. I just love the way it feels going on my legs! It is a mix of tamanu, shea, and olive oil which makes a milky cream that makes your skin feel smooth and yummy. It is perfect for when getting out of the shower or a day of being in the sun. It heals and protects your skin, so it is the perfect eczema cream. It smells so good I could eat it!

New and Exciting Things

July has been an interesting ride so far. A lot of ups and downs- especially last week!! Last week was my last week with Franklin Goose. BUT I joined an amazing company that I will share more details with later 😉 Let’s just say I’m more than excited to begin working with them.

Last week would have been my due date if I had not lost the baby/babies. Since the two sacs never truly developed with embryos, we have no clue of knowing it they were twins or not. But, my friend did welcome her son Alex into the world on Thursday!

I also found out E might be on the autism spectrum with PDD. We are going to try therapy before diagnosing, but it sure does make a lot of sense out of things I didn’t understand. E is a very intelligent little girl and is in no means disabled, but she does have some social awkwardness. I am very blessed to have 2 great therapist in the area to work with!

I took a little me time over the weekend and headed to the beach to reflect. Didn’t really get a chance to reflect because it was sooo freakin hot that was all I could think about! But, I feel refreshed and ready to begin the next stage of my life. I can’t wait to share the next journey with everyone and hopefully will have some extra time to get back to blogging. I hate being such a slacker!

I also am going to begin a little side business doing social media/PR work for small companies who can’t really afford to hire someone. If you know of someone, please have them contact me!

I hope everyone is keeping cool and having a great week!

Today I Ate A Rainbow Giveaway

This giveaway is over! Thanks to all that entered. Congrats to comment #25!
I’ve had issues with my comments, so I’m reposting and doing this over 🙂
This is my little rainbow. She is obsessed with rainbows and rainbow colored things- including fruits and vegetables thanks to Today I Ate a Rainbow!
E has SPD (sensory processing disorder) which has stopped her from eating certain foods due to the texture. When she has issues with a fruit or vegetable I find a different way to offer them instead of giving up. But getting her to try things a second time has been a challenge.

When I heard about Today I Ate A Rainbow, I knew this was something I had to look into for her. I thought if she saw how food could look like a rainbow, she’d be more inspired to TRY new things. And over the past month, it’s totally worked! She now likes some fruits and veggies raw, some fried, and some frozen that she couldn’t eat before. All because of the power of color and presentation!

“Today I Ate a Rainbow.
And it tasted GREAT!
Today I Are a Rainbow
And it was on my PLATE!
My body is so healthy and happy TOO
Today I Ate a Rainbow how about YOU!?!”

Today I Ate A Rainbow was designed for children 3 years old and up. A brilliant mom, Kia Robertson, decided to create a program that inspires children to eat their fruits and veggies in a fun colorful way. She has written a book, created charts, shopping lists, fun magnets, tee shirts, and an amazing website filled with useful knowledge for parents and children.

Kia, like E and myself has texture issues with certain foods. But she realizes the importance in eating all of the colors and how everyone can enjoy food hassle free! She has fabulous tips on her website along with meal ideas and how to handle picky eaters. Not to mention a fun area for kids to play!

E was sent The Today I Ate a Rainbow Kit. It comes with a Rainbow Chart that has all of the colors plus fruits and veggies that are each color, 26 magnets, a shopping list, and The Rainbow Bunch Book! E loves charts that show how well she has done for the day, and it being a rainbow has made it even more special. She is able to track her progress and see what she needs to eat to get all 5 colors.

The Rainbow Bunch Book is awesome! It helps children realize why it’s important to eat their fruits and vegetables. Some of the Rainbow Bunch characters suffer from obesity, poor concentration, lack of energy, malnutrition, and weakened immune systems.  The Rainbow Bunch Book shows how the Rainbow Bunch change their eating habits by incorporating all of the colors of the rainbow into their diets so they can become healthy. You can read more about the characters online. This is truly an amazing tool to help your child to understand the importance of fruits and vegetables, especially when they don’t see how lack of energy and being sick relate to their eating habits.

Why is it important to eat different colors? Well each fruit and vegetable contains phytonutrients that give them their color and they help our bodies in different ways. Some of the top phytonutrients Dr. Sears suggest are: “soy, tomato, broccoli, garlic, flax seed, citrus fruit, melon, pink grapefruit, blueberries, sweet potato, chili peppers, and legumes. Honorable mention: green tea, red grapes, papaya, carrots, kale, nuts and seeds, eggplant, artichoke, cabbage, brussel sprouts, onions, apples, cauliflower, dried apricots, pumpkin, squash, spinach, mangos, and shiitake mushrooms.”

A kid needs a minimum of 5 fruits and veggies every day! So, that is perfect that there are 5 colors of the rainbow. Today E has had: raspberries, strawberries, tomatoes, carrots, peaches, banana, artichoke, raisins, blueberries, and blackberries.

Moms Clean Air Force

I wrote this for the Franklin Goose Blog but wanted to share since this is a very important topic right now!
With 4 months until elections and the finalization of the EPA’s first-ever national policy created to reduce mercury emissions from the electricity sector, Franklin Goose has teamed up with Moms Clean Air Force to help educate parents on clean air and how we can protect our children.
I attended a webinar a few weeks ago hosted by Moms Clean Air Force and have been blown away by the discussion ever since. Before I attended, I had no idea that mercury, arsenic, chromium, nickle, and other chemicals were released into the air from coal mined plants.
According to Moms Clean Air Force, “American coal plants produce 386,000 tons of hazardous air pollutants every year. These poisons affect every part of the human body, leading to disease, birth defects, brain damage, premature death and cancers. Children are especially vulnerable.”
The webinar was hosted by Dominique Browning, author of Slow Love, blogger at Slow Love Life, former editor-in-chief of House & Garden, and lead blogger for the Moms Clean Air Force Jessica Capshaw, star of “Grey’s Anatomy”, and Vickie Patton, General Counsel for the Environmental Defense Fund also joined the discussion. You can catch a video of the webinar here.
After listening to these amazing women speak and doing a little research on my own, I knew this was something that Franklin Goose needed to be a part of. We have 4 months before election time and the EPA has introduced a rule called the “Mercury and Air Toxic Standards,” which will hopefully be finalized in November 2011. This is the first-ever national policy created to reduce mercury emissions from the electricity sector!
You can see a map of all coal mined plants in North America by clicking here.   You can also check the grade of your city’s air quality here.
I was rather shocked at what I learned by just visiting those sites. It made me start thinking about all of the children I know with breathing problems like asthma. I also have known several non-smokers that died from lung cancer. All of these things started making me think more about the effect of our air on our health and well being. Then when we had consecutive code orange air quality days, I decided it was time to start writing my local government officials as well as getting more involved with our air quality.
I know that some parents don’t have the time to write their officials, but you can help by:
Franklin Goose is now a proud ally and partner with Moms Clean Air Force and we hope that you will get involved! If you have any ideas on how parents can get more involved, please let us know!
What is the rating of your city? Are there any coal fired plants near where you live?
