During this time, I had a baby and after learning some disturbing things about big name baby shampoo, I started researching children’s products and eventually family products. I began a blog, Mkokopelli, as a side project to document all of the things I was learning and to share my knowledge with other concerned parents. Mkokopelli led me down many exciting roads as I got to work with amazing companies and organizations. I began freelancing for several big named eco-friendly businesses including Inhabitots, Stonyfield, Franklin Goose, Earth Mama Angel Baby, The Baby Grocery Store, Juice Beauty, rocklovepeace, and Sacred Pregnancy. After having my second child, I decided to focus my talents on social media content as well as video editing. My current clients are a multi-billion dollar real estate company based out of Dallas, TX and a NC therapist who specializes in Transformative Insight Imagery. America Recycles Day & a Giveaway

Today is America Recycles Day! Today is dedicated to educating and encouraging everyone to recycle and purchase recycled goods. Recycling has become so much easier than in the past. 20 years ago there were only 1,000 curbside recycling programs and now there are over 10,000!!

Here are a few recycling tips that you may or may not know:

Cleanliness: Make sure you wash out all plastic bottles and cans and keep boxes dry. This will cut down recycling costs, which are already high!

What can’t be recycled:

  • Pizza boxes are not ok to recycle. Since they have been contaminated with food and can’t be washed, they can’t be reused. You can always keep the top of the box for art projects with your little ones. They make great canvases and can also be used under paints to keep your kiddos mess to a minimum.
  • Make sure you take off every cap or lid! If you do not take off the cap, the bottle will be trashed since the workers don’t have the time to take off every cap/lid. Most lids are made out of different plastics than their bottles and have to be separated. Caps can also damage the machines used in the recycling process, so most recycling centers do not take them. You can save them and take them to Aveda for them to reuse in their products.
  • Trash bags and grocery bags cannot be recycled in bins. You can take them to your local market for their own recycling program.
  • Styrofoam, ceramics, wax paper, light bulbs and food soiled paper are also not recyclable.


What can be recycled: Steel cans, aluminum cans, milk jugs, newspapers, magazines, phone books, junk mail, plastic bottles, glass bottles and jars, cereal boxes, plastic toys, and other clean dry cardboard boxes. If you break down shipping boxes, they will be accepted.

Curious Chef Giveaway

So some of you might think I’m nuts for teaching my almost 3 year old how to cook. I love to bake and always have. One day she asked to help, so I let her pour the ingredients in. This has continued for several months, so when I came across Curious Chef, I knew these were perfect products for her. This Saturday’s Holiday Gear Giveaway is about holiday cookie baking!

Curious Chef is a wonderful cooking utensil store, just for kids. It’s hard for little hands to work with adult cooking utensils. Not to mention it makes them feel special they have their own gear. Ella now has her own cooking drawer- which has distracted her from all of the other drawers she’s not supposed to be in. All of the Curious Chef’s products are BPA free and meet and exceed the CPSC testing standards. I was worried about my old cookie cutters and if they had BPA in them. I didn’t want Ella playing with them, just in case. So this truly has been a amazing find!

Curious Chef has over 49 child sized cooking utensils to choose from and some amazing kits. They have some awesome party kits like a Sundae kit, Holiday Cookie kit and Pizza Party kit that would be great for birthday parties or sleepovers. We got to review the 6 Piece Cookie Kit and had some extra holiday cookie cutters sent over. The 6 piece kit comes with a large silicone mixing spoon, whisk, nylon cookie cutter, non stick rolling pin, and 2 cookie cutters.
We had planned a cookie party with several of Ella’s friends, but like most plans- they fell through last minute since some kiddos got sick. It seems like they keep passing the same junk back and forth. So today Ella and I had our holiday cookie adventure and it wasn’t as hard as I expected it to be. She did most of the work and I was surprised at how well she did. We used a simple organic sugar cookie mix so it wouldn’t be too difficult. Here are some pics of our experience:The whisk was very easy for her to use and once she got the idea of going in circles fast and she was able to scramble the eggs. Then she enjoyed pouring the melted butter into the egg and the mix was very easy for her to stir with the silicone spatula. I then had to step in and knead. Who knows what would have happened if I had allowed her to do that since she had already wanted to eat the egg. 🙂 We then put the dough in the fridge for 4 hours and came back to it. Yes, she concentrating hard on rolling! The non-stick roller was also very easy to use when the dough was a little warmer. It was difficult for her to push down hard on the cold dough. But she got it! And she loved using the cookie cutters to make shapes. We got the Christmas tree, bell, ginger bread man and star cutters to use. That was her favorite part out of the whole process- besides eating the cookies.
Here is the kiddo using the spatula to put the sugar cookies in her tin. We then made a organic cream cheese frosting and added some Just Tomatoes Powdered Raspberries to half of the mixture. We also added some Just Tomatoes Powdered Blueberries to some of the dough and Just Tomatoes Banana Powder to the top of some of the cookies for a variety. They all turned out super yummy!

So I did all of this with a almost 3 year old. Curious Chef is recommended for ages 5+, but with your help, any child can learn how to cook. If you have smaller children and want to introduce them to cooking, have them play with the utensils with water. The measuring spoons, whisk, and measuring cups would be great to start off by simple play. Not to mention the mathematical concepts you will be teaching! I let Ella use her rolling pin to roll play dough and try the cookie cutters with that so she knew what to do when it came time to actually make the cookies.

OK, so maybe kids don’t like getting clothes for gifts, but I love when Ella gets them. Saves me some $$ and it’s a practical gift! Clothing is also an easy way out when you don’t know what to get a guy! Wear the Earth has clothing for everyone in the family. Since they didn’t have Ella’s size in the holiday tee’s, Wear the Earth sent us the Organic Cotton Shine Dress.This peasant dress fits the personality of my little hippy girl and is one of her favorite colors. So she has begged to wear this almost every day! It is a jersey like organic cotton that is extra soft. It comes in sizes 2-5T and there is a limited seal brown in 5T. Here is a different view since Ella was being Ella and didn’t want her picture taken:Wear the Earth started in 2008 by a stay at home mom who left retail to raise her family. Tiffany did intensive research and decided to go with organic and Eco-friendly products that are good for us and the environment. No, I’m not a pirate, but I sure have been talking like one for the past 2 days. Our internet and phone went out yesterday a.m. and finally just got restored. I think I seriously went into withdrawals without my internet! When Ella was an infant I was against all copyrighted characters. I didn’t want Elmo and Dora taking over my house. I especially despised Dora after watching a few episodes at a friend’s house a couple years earlier. You just saw a review of PlanToys last week, we’ll I’m back with another review of another fabulous product they have created, The Breakfast Menu.This non-toxic rubberwood food set comes complete with a serving tray, salt & pepper shakers, 2 slices of bread, cheese, sourdough roll, hard boiled egg that is 2 pieces, egg holder, sausage, bacon and a fried egg. Since there are some small parts, it’s recommended for ages 3+. I have enjoyed sitting on the couch while Ella “cooks breakfast” for me and brings it to me on a tray! I can’t wait until she’s old enough to make me a real breakfast in bed! She has loved making sandwiches with the different foods and even adding her other fruit and veggies to her menu.I love kitchen play accessories that prepare younger children for cooking and making food decisions. The doll is wearing a cute hat that almost looks like an elf hat in the back. It separates into two pieces and is tied with knots. Ella has loved her new “green baby” and has welcomed her into her nighttime loveys. Which is a big thing because she only has 2 loveys and normally throws the rest on the floor. It’s Toy Time Tuesday for the Gift Guide and this is something for infants and even toddlers. Ella was given a Under the Nile Banana Teether for her first Christmas. This is a few days late.. but here is Friday’s Clothing Gift Giveaway! Before we were into organic clothing, I loved Baby Gap. Again, I forgot to take pics on the day I painted Ella’s nails with the Piggy Paint to match the Simply Chickie Sweet Stuff shirt. My mind is gone and I apologize! But I’m sure you will see the shirt in upcoming holiday outings!

Simply Chickie’s owner, Gwen, creates her own designs on papers she has collected from her worldly travels. She then cuts the designs and paints whatever might augment the picture. The original art is then computer graphically arranged and printed out on your 100% organic tee shirt, onesie or baby hat. The organic fabric has not been dyed or bleached, so it is all natural. The shirts are a soft, thick durable fabric and I’ve had no issues with shrinking. The Tees are available in 2, 4, and 6 T and the onesies are available for 3-6, 6-12, 12-18 and 18-24 months.

Simply Chickie carries some hilarious designs that are sure to make anyone laugh, but they also have some sweet and simple designs for everyone. Another great winter shirt/onesie is the Ski Bum, which has Ski Bum written on the butt! There is also the I Toot Toot for the train lovers. There are over 25 designs to choose from and more will be added closer to the Spring. Gwen is hard at work for some new artwork!
